COUTURE IN ORBIT

EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY & POLITECNICO DI MILANO MAKE FASHION

The European Space Agency (ESA) launched the project COUTURE IN ORBIT by inviting the most prestigious School of Design in Europe to create a collection of garments inspired by Space scenario, that use ESA technologies, but are designed to be worn every day on Earth. Annalisa Dominoni + Benedetto Quaquaro led the project for Italy – inside the International Master of Science in Design for the Fashion System at the School of Design, Politecnico di Milano – to imagine new concept enhance Space innovation through a strong capacity of visioning.

The results were presented at the Science Museum in London on 25th May 2016 during an event that included a catwalk and an exhibition of the whole collection, to show how Space technology are interpreted in a fashionable way and incorporated into clothes. This initiative is the first important step to communicate to a huge public the role of European Space Agency (ESA) in developing innovation and inspiring people through the fashion language that celebrates Space exploration and research exploitation and their impact in many fields of our life. Task of the designer in this context is to be a mediator between science and culture finding a common language that can help research and industrial worlds to communicate and collaborate together: a design vision is the key to interpret the signs of change in our society and translate them into new values.

COUTURE IN ORBIT ESA POLIMI has been awarded by Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI) with ADI DESIGN INDEX 2017, Premio Compasso D’Oro ADI – XXV Edition, and Regione Lombardia with PREMIO ECCELLENZE DELLA LOMBARDIA.
